Safe & Simple Ways to Deal with Heartburn

1

Searing chest pain is enough to drive some people nuts. Imagine how it feels like if your chest were on fire. It can send people into panic mode. Heartburn is not to be confused with a heart attack, though. If, after enjoying a meal, or taking substances like peppermint, coffee, alcoholic beverage, or fatty foods, you feel a burning sensation radiating to your neck or throat areas, then it’s heartburn. If it occurs after every meal, or with regular intensity, see a doctor to ascertain if what you have, after all, is acid reflux, a more serious condition. Before your heartburn becomes chronic, you can take preventive measures, like watching what you eat. As a symptom of acid reflux, heartburn which can strike with alarming intensity arises when stomach acids back up into the lower throat region. Take reassurance in the fact that there are heartburn remedies when such an uncomfortable episode occurs from out of the blue.

Heartburn sufferers may take their pick from remedies ranging from over-the-counter medication to herbal solutions. It may also be good to make some dietary changes like cutting back on caffeine and other substances that act as stimulant, and minimizing stress, which can also ignite heartburn along with certain foods. There are plenty of natural antacids, like bananas, chamomile tea, and apple cider vinegar which may alleviate heartburn. Other natural heartburn remedies are aloe vera juice and ginger, which may be taken raw or as tea, or incorporated in meals. Heartburn may strike in the middle of the night, or affect pregnant women. Hence, natural home remedies have been tried and some of them have proven to be effective for most people. Some individuals who want instant relief hie off to the drugstore for antacids when heartburn occurs. Pregnant women would rather not take over-the-counter medicines, of course, and opt for natural remedies, like taking a tablespoon of vinegar and munching on an apple. Those with a frequent and severe case of heartburn must work with their healthcare professional for the best cure.

It’s best to refrain from eating certain foods which are known to trigger heartburn. These include citrus fruits, peppermint, tomato-based foods, alcoholic drinks, and colas. Change lifestyle habits that tend to stimulate production of stomach acids, like smoking. Herbal heartburn remedies , like turmeric (a powerful anti-inflammatory staple of Indian cooking that’s known to ease pain caused by osteoarthritis) , slippery elm, and licorice have also been shown to work for some people. Stay on the safe side and consult your physician, though, before taking any kind of herbal supplementation. People who have experienced heartburn also know proper positioning of the body may help somewhat in preventing heartburn. At night elevate the head when sleeping. A flat sleeping position tends to press the stomach’s contents against the valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (which holds stomach acid in the tummy). Irritation may be caused by the stomach acid coming into contact with the esophageal lining. What you need to avoid is putting pressure against the esophageal sphincter which has weakened.

Good blog. I had GERD, acid indigestion, for years and took Prilosec for it. Last year, I decided I needed to quit taking all man-made prescriptions because I had been doing and still do a lot of research on natural home remedies. I discovered that the medications I was taking were the cause of my GERD, osteoporosis and irritable bowel syndrome.
My GERD was so bad that without medication, I would throw up all the time. I started taking super enzymes and chewing on DGL, deglycyrrhizinated licorice root extract between meals to soothe my indigestion. Then I also discovered taking apple cider vinegar and honey worked like a charm to get rid of the horrible discomfort I would get at night sometimes, and yes, my bed was elevated.
Since, I have changed my diet, no sugar, flour or dairy.
I no longer have a problem with acid reflux. It is wonderful.
